Canada is preparing to slash its 100% tariff on Chinese-made EVs—a major shift that could open the market to much cheaper electric cars (potentially under ~C$35,000 / US$25,000).

The InsideEVs article says the move is part of a Canada–China trade deal discussed during PM Mark Carney’s visit to Beijing, where Canada agreed to lower EV tariffs in exchange for China reducing tariffs on key Canadian farm exports (especially canola).
To prevent a sudden flood of imports, the deal includes a cap of 49,000 Chinese EVs per year, rising to about 70,000 over five years. The article frames this as a break from the U.S. approach (which has tried to block Chinese EVs) and a potentially disruptive change for the North American auto industry.
